The valley floor was a maze of creeks, old growth forest and exotic ferns. Formation of a City Puyallup is a scenic place that emerged among hops, succulent berries, and the beautiful flowers of the local bulb farmers. Pioneer hop king and champion of the Oregon Trail, Ezra Meeker, planned the city in , giving it and the river flowing through the fertile valley its unique name. The City of Puyallup was incorporated in , and Meeker served as its first mayor.
The livelihood for many local residents during the early years was primarily agriculture. Meeker made three more trips along the trail, including one by car and the last trip at age 93 in an open cockpit airplane. Today, Puyallup is famous for exquisite fields of flowers and its huge state fair.
The parade starts in Tacoma and travels through three more towns. During March and April, visitors are drawn to the Van Lierop Bulb Farm , just two miles east of Puyallup, to see magical spring gardens featuring a multitude of blooming crocuses, tulips, daffodils, and irises.
The granddaddy of all events at Puyallup happens for 17 days in September. The fair has taken place every year since , except during World War II when the fairgrounds were occupied by the United States Army.

Puyallup Valley farmers Darius M. Ross and his son, Charles, donated land for the station and it was built in What is now the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center has evolved into a acre research institute that examines biological, environmental, and social issues far beyond the visions of its founders.
Among its many successes is its widely emulated Master Gardener Program. The fair, which attracts 1. As the century turned, poultry and dairy farms appeared in the valley and sawmills and woodworking plants flourished, but berries -- blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, loganberries, and gooseberries -- remained the most lucrative cash crops. Berries remained a major crop, now mostly for jams, but around George Lawler introduced daffodils to the valley and they thrived.
Puyallup Valley bulb farmers sponsor their first Daffodil Parade on March 17, , to promote their crop. The parade was a modest procession of automobiles and bicycles festooned with daffodils.
